How an absorption refrigerator actually works

An absorption unit has no compressor and no moving parts in the cooling circuit. A sealed loop holds ammonia, water, hydrogen gas, and sodium chromate as a corrosion inhibitor. A propane burner or an electric heating element boils the ammonia and water mixture in the boiler, and the resulting circulation through condenser, evaporator, and absorber moves heat out of the cabinet by chemistry rather than mechanically. It is elegant, silent, and slow, and it depends entirely on gravity to keep the solution flowing where it belongs.

That gravity dependence is why level matters. Operating tilted more than a few degrees for an extended period lets the liquid ammonia pool in the wrong section, and the boiler then bakes concentrated solution until sodium chromate precipitates and forms a solid plug. Once that happens the loop is done. There is no service procedure to clear it, and the yellow-green powder residue around the boiler tube is the visual signature we look for. A unit parked on a slope for a season is a common way to arrive here.

Ventilation is the second killer and it is entirely preventable. The rear compartment relies on a chimney effect: cool air enters the lower sidewall vent, rises past the condenser fins, and exits the roof vent or upper sidewall vent. Owners stack items in the exterior access door, birds nest in the flue, and installers leave out the baffles that force air across the fins. Every one of those raises condenser temperature, cuts cooling capacity, and shortens the life of the loop. Cleaning and baffling that column often restores performance with no parts at all.

On the gas side, the burner assembly and flue tube gather rust flakes and combustion deposits, and a spider will happily build in a venturi over a single storage season. That produces a lazy yellow flame, incomplete combustion, soot in the flue, and poor heat transfer to the boiler. Pulling and cleaning the burner, flue baffle, and orifice is a routine service that restores far more cooling than most owners expect.

Compressor refrigerators and residential conversions

Twelve volt compressor units from Vitrifrigo, Nova Kool, Furrion, and others use a variable speed DC compressor, typically a Danfoss or Secop design, driven by an electronic control module. They cool faster, hold temperature better in heat, and do not care about being level. What they do care about is voltage. The module monitors supply and shuts down on low voltage to protect the battery, and it flashes a fault code count on an LED that tells you exactly what it saw. Reading that code is the first step, not the last.

The most common complaint on these is intermittent operation traced to a poor connection rather than a bad compressor. A long undersized run from the distribution panel, a crimped butt splice that has corroded, or a shared ground with a heavy load will all drag voltage at the module below the cutoff during startup. The unit stops, voltage recovers, it restarts, and the owner reports a refrigerator that runs sometimes. We measure at the module terminals under startup load, which is where the truth is.

Residential refrigerator conversions are common on larger coaches and they change the power conversation entirely. A household unit runs off the inverter, which means the house bank now carries a continuous load whenever you are not plugged in, and the practical minimum is a substantial lithium bank with a matching charge system. The mechanical side also matters: household cabinets are not built for road vibration, so the unit needs proper bracing, a secured door retention scheme, and a mounting that does not transmit frame flex into the case.

Cooktops, ovens, microwaves, and laundry

Cooktop and oven complaints usually resolve to gas supply, orifice condition, or the thermocouple and safety valve. A burner that lights and dies as soon as the knob is released has a thermocouple that is no longer generating enough millivolts to hold the safety valve open, either because the tip is carboned or because the flame is no longer bathing it. Oven temperature that reads wildly off is generally a thermostat bulb that has drifted or been dislodged from its clip, not a bad oven.

Convection microwaves are the appliance most often replaced rather than repaired, because the magnetron and the high voltage section are not economical to service on a consumer unit and the cabinet cutouts are model specific. What is worth checking first is the supply circuit and the door interlock switches, since a microwave that runs and does not heat frequently has a failed interlock or a tripped thermal cutout rather than a dead magnetron. That check takes minutes and occasionally saves the whole expense.

Splendide and similar combination washer dryers come in vented and ventless versions and they generate different complaints. Ventless units condense moisture out of the drum air using a cold water spray, so a slow or interrupted water supply produces clothes that tumble for hours and stay damp. Vented units need a genuinely clear duct to the sidewall, and a crushed run behind a cabinet is the usual cause of long dry times. Drain pump failures and out-of-balance faults from a worn shock absorber round out the list.

Range hoods, ice makers plumbed to the fresh system, and instant hot water dispensers all show up too. The recurring theme with any of them is that the appliance is one part of a system that includes a supply, a vent, and a mounting, and the failure is as likely to sit in one of those as in the appliance itself.

Deciding between repair and replacement

For absorption refrigerators the decision hinges on whether the sealed cooling unit is compromised. Boards, igniters, thermistors, burners, and door hardware are all serviceable and worth fixing. A crystallized or leaking cooling unit is not, and the choice becomes a replacement cooling unit, a new absorption box, or a conversion to a compressor unit. Each has a different cost and a different power consequence, and we lay out all three with numbers rather than steering you toward one.

For everything else the arithmetic is simpler and it usually favors repair. Control boards, switches, valves, motors, and pumps are available for most RV appliances well past what the industry would consider a service life, and the labor to change them is modest compared with the cost of modifying a cabinet cutout for a different model. Where a replacement is genuinely needed, cabinet dimensions and the door swing are what dictate the shortlist, not the specification sheet.

Every appliance job here happens with the unit in a bay, because most of these diagnoses require running the appliance through full cycles and watching. An absorption unit needs hours on each heat source to prove a cooling result, and a laundry unit needs a full wash and dry cycle. That is bay time, and it is why we do not offer this as a mobile service.

Frequently Asked Questions

My absorption fridge works on gas but not on electric. Which part is it?

That pattern isolates the fault to the electric heating element or its circuit, because both heat sources feed the same boiler. We check element resistance, the supply at the element, the thermal cutoff, and the relay on the control board. It is one of the more satisfying diagnoses in this trade because the split in symptoms points directly at a small group of inexpensive parts.

Is it worth replacing a cooling unit or should I convert to a compressor fridge?

Both are defensible. A replacement cooling unit keeps the existing cabinet and the ability to run on propane without touching the electrical system. A compressor conversion cools better in heat, ignores level, and needs a house bank that can carry it continuously. If you already have lithium and solar, the conversion usually wins. If you boondock on propane, it usually does not.

How level does an absorption refrigerator have to be?

Within roughly three degrees side to side and six front to back while parked and running, which is well inside what any leveling system achieves. Driving does not matter because the motion keeps the solution moving. The damage comes from sitting tilted for hours or days with the unit operating, which is how the boiler ends up baking concentrated solution into a permanent blockage.

Can you install a residential refrigerator in my coach?

Yes, and the cabinet work and power work are the real scope. The opening usually needs modification, the unit needs bracing and door retention for road travel, and the house system needs an inverter and a bank sized to carry it whenever you are off shore power. We quote the electrical portion alongside the install, because a residential box on an undersized bank is a disappointment waiting to happen.

The microwave runs but does not heat. Replace it?

Check first. A door interlock switch, a blown thermal cutout, or a failed high voltage diode produces exactly that symptom and some of those are inexpensive parts. If the magnetron itself has failed on a consumer unit, replacement is generally the practical answer, and then cabinet dimensions and trim kit availability drive the model choice more than features do.

Do you work on appliances in camper van conversions?

Regularly. Van builds concentrate everything into a small envelope, so the recurring issues are ventilation clearance behind compressor units, undersized supply runs to the module, and induction cooktops sharing an inverter with other loads. The appliances themselves are usually fine. We tend to spend most of the labor on the installation around them, which is where the real fault lives.
