A sweeper spends its working life wet by design, which means every structural repair on one has to assume water will reach both sides of the metal.

Water is part of how the machine works

Dust suppression means spray. A mechanical broom sweeper or a regenerative air unit runs a water system continuously while working, wetting the surface ahead of the brushes and inside the pickup path. That water then carries fine grit into every seam of the hopper and along the conveyor or elevator housing. Fine grit travels everywhere the water travels, and it settles in the seams.

The material collected is abrasive, wet, and often chemically unhelpful: road grit, brake dust, oil residue, and whatever washed into the gutter. Storing that inside a steel hopper for the length of a shift, every shift, produces corrosion conditions closer to a marine environment than to a typical truck body. Steel in that environment loses thickness steadily rather than dramatically, which is why nobody notices until a seam opens.

Because the machine is always damp, any bare steel exposed during a repair starts corroding almost immediately. That single fact governs how we sequence work on a sweeper: prepare, repair, and coat without leaving prepared surfaces sitting overnight, and treat interior faces before closing anything up. Leaving prepared steel exposed overnight on a machine like this undoes a day of work, so the sequence is planned around coating rather than around convenience.

Arms, tanks, and the elevator path

Brush arm mounts carry a load that changes constantly. The brush follows the road surface, so the arm and its pivot absorb every crown, gutter, and pothole while under down pressure. Wear at the pivot bushings develops into slop, slop turns into shock loading, and shock loading cracks the mount. Bushings are inexpensive to replace. The mount they protect is not.

Water tank mounts fatigue for a different reason: mass and sloshing. A tank holding several hundred gallons is a substantial moving load on a vehicle that stops and starts constantly on a route, and the brackets take that cycling. Cracks at the bracket welds are the usual finding and they are typically well developed before anyone notices. Bracket welds are worth inspecting at every service.

The conveyor or elevator housing wears through from the inside. Abrasive material moving continuously against a housing wall does what abrasive material does, and the wall thins at the points where flow concentrates. That is not corrosion and it is not impact damage, it is erosion, and the repair usually involves adding a wear surface rather than simply replacing like for like.

How we finish a repair on a wet machine

Every structural repair here gets full coating on both faces. That means interior hopper surfaces, the back side of a let-in panel, and inside any box section we open. Coating only the visible face on a sweeper is the reason so many repairs on these machines last a single season, and it is entirely avoidable. Interior faces get coated before anything is closed up.

We prefer to replace section rather than plate over thin material, for the same reason plating fails on refuse bodies: the crevice between an old thin panel and a new plate becomes a moisture trap and corrosion continues where nobody can inspect it. Let-in repairs take longer to fit and they leave a structure that can be inspected and recoated later rather than one hiding its own condition.

Fabrication is on site, so hopper panels, mounting brackets, arm structure, and wear surfaces are built here. Municipal and contractor fleets get scheduled around route commitments, with parts staged ahead of teardown, and all work performed at our building rather than at a yard. Purchase order billing and estimates itemized by operation are both routine here, which municipal fleets generally require.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our hopper leaks along a bottom seam. Can it be sealed?

Sealant on a corroded seam is a temporary measure at best, because the leak indicates section loss or a failed weld rather than a gap. We open the area, measure remaining thickness, cut back to sound material, and reweld, then coat both faces. That takes longer than a bead of sealant and it is the version that survives a season of wet material.

A brush arm mount cracked again after being welded. What should change?

Check the pivot condition before repairing the mount. Worn bushings let the arm move in ways it should not, which shock loads the mount every time the brush hits a gutter transition. Rebuilding the mount without addressing that slop ensures repetition. We look at the whole arm assembly geometry, then reinforce the mount so the load spreads.

The elevator housing has worn through in one spot. New housing?

Not necessarily. Erosion concentrates where material flow does, so a full replacement often puts new steel in the same path and gets you back here. We let in new material at the worn area and, where practical, add a replaceable wear surface at the high-flow point so future maintenance means changing a wear part rather than cutting the housing again.

Yes. Municipal fleets and sweeping contractors both use this shop, and we can work with purchase orders and itemized estimates by operation. Scheduling is planned around route coverage so a unit is not pulled during a period you cannot cover. Structural, fabrication, and refinishing work all take place at our Yorba Linda facility.
