What you can move and what is holding the roof up
In a laminated sidewall coach, the aluminum stud cage is structural and so are certain interior partitions, particularly those flanking a slide opening or carrying a roof truss bearing point. Removing one because it makes the floorplan better is how you end up with a roof that sags at the centerline and a slide that binds within a season. We identify load paths before demolition, and where a wall genuinely must come out, we replace its function with a header or a beam rather than hoping the roof was overbuilt.
Stick and tin construction behaves differently. The framing is dimensional lumber, easier to modify and easier to misread, because a stud wall in an older trailer may be carrying nothing at all or may be the only thing keeping the roof bow from spreading. On a steel unibody van, the ribs and roof bows are the structure and the walls are trim, which makes layout changes freer but makes any cutting into the shell a much more serious decision.
Slides constrain everything. A slide room sweeps a fixed volume through the living space, and any new cabinet, seat base, or appliance that intrudes into that path will be discovered by the mechanism rather than by the designer. We map the full travel and the clearance envelope on the drawing, not with a tape measure after the boxes are built. The same goes for the underfloor: adding a floor-mounted item over the slide rails or the tank straps is a fast way to create a problem you have to undo.
Weight, balance, and the numbers on the sticker
Every unit carries a federal label listing gross vehicle weight rating and, on multi-axle units, gross axle weight ratings. Cargo carrying capacity is what remains after the unit as built, with full propane and a driver allowance, is subtracted. Many production trailers leave the factory with far less of that margin than owners assume, sometimes under a thousand pounds. Quartz countertops, a residential refrigerator, tile, and a lithium bank can consume all of it before a single suitcase goes in.
Placement matters as much as total mass. Weight added behind the rear axle on a travel trailer reduces tongue weight and moves the combination toward instability at highway speed, which is a genuine safety issue rather than a comfort one. Weight added high raises the center of gravity and makes crosswind handling worse. We plan heavy items low and between the axles wherever the layout allows it, and we tell you when a request pushes the numbers the wrong way.
The honest way to handle this is with a scale. On any remodel that adds meaningful mass we recommend weighing the unit by axle before and after, so the change is documented rather than estimated. It also settles arguments about whether a unit was already over its rating before we touched it, which is more common than the industry likes to admit. Substituting a solid surface countertop for stone, or a lighter frame for a sofa, often recovers hundreds of pounds with no visible compromise.
Materials selection follows from all of this. Baltic birch plywood in a cabinet box weighs less than particle core, holds a fastener far better, and survives humidity swings without swelling. Aluminum framing for a bed platform costs more up front and saves weight where it matters. These are not luxury choices, they are how a build stays inside the rating and stays together over rough pavement.
Surfaces, upholstery, and finishes that survive travel
Factory interior walls are usually thin luan panels with a printed vinyl film bonded to them. That film does not take paint without preparation, and the standard failure is a beautiful painted interior that starts peeling at the seams within a year. Adhesion requires degreasing, scuff sanding, and a bonding primer suited to vinyl, and even then the panel joints and battens need to be handled deliberately. We would rather replace a panel than paint over a surface that will not hold.
Upholstery in a vehicle is not living room upholstery. Foam has to resist compression set from being folded into a dinette, fabric has to hold up to abrasion and sunlight through large windows, and anything on a convertible mechanism has to tolerate being bent thousands of times. We specify contract-grade textiles with real abrasion ratings and marine vinyls where moisture is a factor, and we build seat bases so the mechanism is still serviceable after the new cover is on.
Window treatments, backsplashes, and trim are where road vibration shows up first. Adhesive-only backsplash tile fails at the edges, unsupported floating shelves rack and loosen, and trim held by pins alone works loose. Mechanical fastening plus adhesive is the standard here, edges get a captured trim rather than a caulk line, and anything with mass gets blocking behind it. It costs slightly more labor and it is the difference between a finish that lasts and one that rattles.
Electrical, plumbing, and the systems behind the walls
A remodel is the least expensive moment in a vehicle life to fix the wiring, because the walls are already open. Adding USB points, reading lights, a television location, or an induction cooktop means new circuits, and those have to be calculated against the existing panel capacity rather than tapped off whatever is nearest. We run new home runs, fuse at the correct rating, use marine-grade tinned conductor where corrosion is a risk, and label the panel so the next person can follow it.
The same window applies to plumbing. Aging supply lines, a marginal pump location, and a tank vent that was never routed properly are all cheap to correct while a floor is open and expensive to reach afterward. We look at what is exposed during demolition and give you a short list of things worth doing while access is essentially at no additional labor cost, separated clearly from the work you actually asked for.
Van conversions carry an extra layer, because seating and sleeping surfaces occupied during travel involve occupant restraint. Seat bases have to be anchored into structure with the correct backing, not into a plywood floor, and swivel bases and belted benches need to be installed to the manufacturer instructions to mean anything. We build to that standard and we will decline a request that puts a belt on something that cannot carry the load, which comes up more often than it should.

Can you remove the wall between the bedroom and the living area?
Often, but not always, and the answer depends on what that wall carries. In a laminated coach some interior partitions support a roof bearing point or stabilize a slide opening. Where that is the case we can still open the space by substituting a header or a beam that takes over the load. What we will not do is cut it out and hope, which is a common outcome of unpermitted owner remodels.
How long does a full interior remodel take?
A cosmetic refresh with flooring, paint, and upholstery generally runs two to four weeks. A structural layout change with new cabinetry, moved plumbing, and added circuits runs six to twelve. The variable that moves the schedule most is not our labor, it is material lead time on countertops and custom upholstery, and we sequence orders early so that is not the thing holding your unit in a bay.
Will a remodel affect what my unit is worth?
Quality work in a neutral direction generally helps, and highly personal work generally does not. Buyers respond to updated surfaces, better storage, and a floorplan that suits how people actually travel. They respond less well to bold color, removed sleeping capacity, or anything that looks owner-built. We are happy to point out where a choice narrows your future buyer pool, and then build whatever you decide.
Can I supply my own materials?
For finish items such as fabric, tile, or fixtures, generally yes, and we will tell you honestly whether a selection will survive road service. For structural materials, adhesives, and anything tied to occupant restraint, we supply, because we stand behind every repair we perform and that is only meaningful when we control what went into it. Substituted adhesives in particular cause failures that are indistinguishable from bad workmanship.
Do you build camper van conversions from an empty shell?
We do interior build work on cargo vans, including insulation, walls, cabinetry, seating, and electrical. What we bring to it that a general shop does not is the structural and weight discipline, plus the ability to handle body and glass work in house when the build calls for a window or a roof penetration. Anchoring for occupied seating is done to the seat manufacturer specification, without exception.
Can you work from a designer drawing?
Yes, and we will review it against structure, clearance, and weight before anyone starts cutting. Drawings produced without access to the vehicle commonly place cabinetry inside a slide path, put mass behind the rear axle, or assume a wall can be removed. Those are all fixable on paper. We mark the conflicts, propose alternatives that keep the intent, and build once everyone has agreed on the revision.
