What an onboard set is actually made of
A recreational vehicle generator is two machines sharing a frame in a sound insulated housing. An engine, gasoline, liquid propane, or diesel depending on the coach, drives an alternator end that produces 120 or 240 volts. Between them sits a governor that holds engine speed constant, because on most sets the output frequency is a direct function of shaft speed. A set that hunts or surges is not producing clean power even when it appears to be running.
Control varies by generation. Older units use a simple start and stop circuit with a remote panel. Newer sets add a controller board that manages cranking, monitors oil pressure and temperature, counts run hours, and reports faults through a blink code or a display. Reading those codes correctly is the difference between a targeted repair and a sequence of guesses, and the code definitions differ meaningfully between model families.
The output side reaches your coach through a transfer switch, which selects between shore power and generator power. A great many generator complaints turn out to be transfer switch complaints. The set runs perfectly, produces correct voltage at its own terminals, and nothing inside the vehicle has power because the switch never transferred. Measuring at the set and then at the switch separates the two in a few minutes.
Fuel, storage, and why sets fail after sitting
Gasoline with ethanol content absorbs moisture and begins to break down within months, leaving varnish and gum through the fuel system. Carbureted sets suffer worst: the jets and passages in a small carburetor are tiny, and partially blocked passages produce exactly the symptoms owners describe, cranking without starting, starting then dying, or running only with the choke partly applied. Cleaning or rebuilding the carburetor is routine work here, and it is a consequence of storage rather than of use.
Fuel pickup design catches many owners out. On most coaches the generator draws from the same tank as the chassis engine, but through a pickup tube that sits higher, typically leaving the set without fuel once the tank drops to around a quarter. That is a deliberate design so you cannot strand the vehicle by running the generator overnight, and it is regularly reported to us as an intermittent shutdown fault.
Liquid propane sets have their own pattern: regulator issues, sticking demand valves, and starting difficulty in cold conditions when vapor draw is limited. Diesel sets suffer from microbial growth in stored fuel, plugged filters, and injector fouling. Across all three, the single most effective preventive measure is running the set under meaningful load for a half hour every month, which most owners do not do.
Service intervals and diagnosis
A scheduled service is oil and filter, air filter, spark plugs and ignition inspection on spark ignition sets, fuel filter, a check of the mounting isolators, and an inspection of the exhaust system from the manifold to the tailpipe outlet. Generator hours accumulate independently of vehicle miles, so the interval is driven by the hour meter. A set used heavily for air conditioning in summer can reach a service interval in a single season of use.
The exhaust inspection is not a formality. A generator exhaust leak inside a compartment, or a tailpipe that has corroded or been damaged so it discharges near a window or slide seal, puts carbon monoxide where people sleep. We inspect the full run, check the slide tray seals on tray mounted sets, and verify that the detector inside the coach actually functions. This is the one item on the list where a marginal condition is not acceptable.
Diagnosis on a running fault follows the fault, not a checklist. No start divides quickly into no crank, crank without fuel, and crank without spark, and each branches from there. Runs but no output points at the alternator end, the brushes and slip rings on sets that use them, the voltage regulator, or the controller. Output that collapses under load points at fuel delivery or governor response. Mechanical and electrical labor is posted at $260 per hour.
Load testing and finishing the job
A generator that starts and idles smoothly in a bay has demonstrated very little. The test that matters is applying real load: air conditioners cycling on, converter charging, and the coach running as it would on a hot afternoon. Under that load we watch voltage stability, frequency, governor response as compressors start, and exhaust character. Weak fuel delivery and a lazy governor are invisible at no load and obvious at seventy percent of rated output.
We also verify the whole path rather than the set alone. Output measured at the generator terminals, transfer switch operation confirmed in both directions with a real delay, and voltage measured at the distribution panel. Owners quite reasonably describe the entire chain as the generator, so proving each link is what prevents a repaired set from being returned with the same complaint intact.
The handover includes what the set needs from you. Monthly exercise under load, correct storage practice if the vehicle sits, the fuel level below which the pickup will not supply, and the hour based service interval for your model. Most generator failures that reach this shop are storage failures, and an owner who exercises the set monthly will spend a fraction of what an owner who starts it once a year will.

Frequently Asked Questions
My generator ran fine last season and will not start now. What changed?
Almost always the fuel. Gasoline with ethanol content absorbs moisture and breaks down over months, leaving varnish in the carburetor passages, which on a small set are narrow enough that partial blockage stops it starting. Propane sets develop regulator and demand valve issues, and diesel sets grow microbial contamination and plug filters. Cleaning or rebuilding the fuel system is routine, and monthly exercise under load prevents most of it.
The generator runs but I have no power inside. Is the generator bad?
Probably not. The output has to pass through a transfer switch that selects between shore power and generator power, and that switch fails with burned or welded contacts more often than the set fails. We measure output at the generator terminals first, then at the switch, then at the distribution panel. That sequence identifies within minutes whether you have a generator problem or a switching problem.
How often should the set be serviced?
By hour meter, not by calendar or by vehicle mileage, and the interval is model specific. Heavy summer air conditioning use can reach a service interval within one season. The service covers oil and filter, air filter, ignition components on spark ignition sets, fuel filter, mounting isolators, and a full exhaust inspection. Between services, run it under meaningful load for about thirty minutes each month.
Why does my generator shut off when the fuel tank gets low?
That is designed behavior on most coaches. The generator draws from the chassis fuel tank through a pickup tube set higher than the engine pickup, typically leaving the set without supply somewhere around a quarter tank. It exists so running the generator overnight cannot strand the vehicle. If yours cuts out well above that level, then it is a genuine fuel delivery fault and we would test it as one.
Do you load test after a repair?
Always. A set that idles smoothly in a bay has proven almost nothing, because weak fuel delivery and a slow governor only appear under real demand. We run it with air conditioners cycling and the coach loaded as it would be on a hot day, monitoring voltage stability, frequency, and response as compressors start. That is the test that predicts how it behaves at a campsite.
Do you service generators on commercial trucks?
Auxiliary and equipment generators associated with an upfit are within our installation and body scope. Engine and drivetrain work on commercial vehicles is not something this shop performs, and neither are inspection services. All work happens in the building at 23281 La Palma Ave, since we do not run mobile, roadside, or on-site fleet service of any kind.
