Glass on a recreational vehicle is a sealing problem before it is a glass problem, because the pane itself rarely fails on its own and the flange it sits against usually does.

The glass on your unit is not all the same

A motorhome windshield is laminated safety glass: two layers bonded to a plastic interlayer, which is why a stone strike leaves a star or a crack rather than shattering the panel. Many Class A coaches use a two piece windshield with a center divider, and each half is enormous, heavy, and expensive to ship. Side and rear glass on the same vehicle is usually tempered, which does not crack, it disintegrates into small pieces when it fails.

Living space windows are a separate world. Framed windows use an aluminum frame that sandwiches the wall with an interior clamp ring and screws, sealed to the exterior with butyl putty tape. Frameless windows bond the glass to a hinged carrier and rely on a compression seal against the wall. Egress windows have release hardware and must open under a defined force, which is a safety requirement rather than a convenience feature.

Dual pane windows add an insulating gas space between two panes with a perimeter seal. When that seal fails, ambient air and moisture enter the cavity and condense between the panes, which is the permanent fog owners describe. Nothing applied to either surface fixes it because the problem is inside the sealed unit. The glass assembly is either resealed by a specialist or replaced.

Why glass work on these vehicles goes wrong

The most common failure is reusing a seal. Butyl putty tape under a window flange hardens and shrinks over years, and once a window has been out, that tape has no compression left. Setting the same window back into the same tape produces a leak within a season. The tape comes off, the flange gets cleaned to bare surface, and fresh material goes in every time, which is slower and is the only version that seals.

The second failure is ignoring what is behind the flange. Water that has been getting past a tired seal has usually been doing so for a while, and the substrate around the opening is often soft, corroded, or delaminated. Bolting a new window to compromised material gives the fasteners nothing to clamp against. We open, inspect, and rebuild the opening when the substrate has gone, because a perfectly installed window in a rotten hole still leaks.

On bonded windshields, the enemy is the pinchweld. Urethane bonds to the paint film, not to the metal, so a previous installer who cut too deep and scratched through the coating leaves a corrosion site. Rust then propagates under the bond line and the new urethane loses its substrate. Correct practice is to trim the old urethane to a thin uniform base, prime any exposure, and bond to that rather than scraping to bare metal.

How the work is done here

Windshields on a coach this size are a multi person set. The opening is prepped, the old urethane trimmed, any exposed surface primed and allowed to flash, and a continuous bead of high modulus urethane laid to the correct height and profile. The glass is then set on stops and pressed to the specified bond thickness. Too little urethane leaves voids, too much squeezes into the visible area and out onto the paint, and neither is correctable after cure.

Cure time is not a suggestion. Every urethane has a safe drive away time that depends on temperature and humidity, and until it is reached the glass is not structurally bonded to the vehicle. On a motorhome the windshield contributes to cab structure, so releasing a unit early is a real risk, not a technicality. We hold the vehicle until the chemistry is where the manufacturer says it should be and tell you the actual number.

Framed window installation is a torque and sequence job. Clamp ring screws are drawn down progressively in a cross pattern so the butyl compresses evenly around the whole perimeter rather than squeezing out on one side and staying loose on the other. Excess butyl is trimmed after it has fully compressed, not immediately, and the exterior perimeter is finished with the correct non-hardening sealant where the design calls for it.

Driver assistance systems and the claim side

Van chassis and newer motorhomes frequently mount forward facing cameras and sensors to the windshield. Replacing that glass moves the camera, and a camera that is out of position by a fraction of a degree reports lane position and following distance incorrectly. Recalibration after windshield replacement is a required operation on those vehicles, performed either statically against targets or dynamically on a road procedure depending on the platform.

Glass claims are often handled separately from collision claims and sometimes carry a different deductible structure. You are entitled to choose where the work is done regardless of which network is suggested, and on oversized units that choice matters, because the number of facilities that can physically bring in a 45-foot coach and set a two piece windshield indoors is small.

Where glass damage accompanies collision damage, the two need to be scoped together. Replacing a windshield before the surrounding structure is straightened means setting new glass into an opening that is about to move, and it usually means buying the same windshield twice. We sequence structural work first, then glass, and document the reason so the order is clear in the file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a fogged dual pane window be repaired instead of replaced?

The fog is moisture inside a failed perimeter seal, so nothing applied to the inner or outer face of the glass will clear it. The insulated glass unit itself has to be resealed by a glass specialist or replaced outright. Resealing is often the better value on units where the frame and hardware are sound, and we assess the frame condition first because a corroded frame makes the decision for you.

How long before I can drive after a windshield replacement?

It depends on the urethane and the conditions that day, and it typically ranges from an hour to several. Until the safe drive away time is reached the glass is not structurally bonded, and on a motorhome the windshield contributes to cab structure. We hold the vehicle until the manufacturer specified time has elapsed at the actual shop temperature and tell you the number rather than estimating.

Do you have to remove the whole window to fix a leak?

Usually yes, if the leak is at the flange. Sealant applied around the outside of a leaking window is a temporary measure that traps water behind it and often accelerates the damage. The correct repair is pulling the window, removing the old hardened butyl entirely, inspecting and repairing the substrate around the opening, and reinstalling on fresh tape with a proper torque sequence.

Does my windshield camera need recalibrating?

If your chassis has forward facing driver assistance, yes, and it is not optional. The camera mounts to the glass, so replacing the glass changes its aim, and a small angular error becomes a large error at distance. We perform the required static target or dynamic road procedure for your platform after the glass is set and cured, and we document the completion in the file.

Why is a motorhome windshield so much more expensive than a car windshield?

Size, volume, and freight. A Class A windshield half is a large piece of laminated glass produced in low volume for a specific coach model, and shipping it without damage requires crating and specialist handling. Availability varies significantly by model and year, and discontinued applications sometimes have long lead times. We confirm availability and pricing before scheduling so the unit is not sitting apart waiting.

Can you install a replacement frameless window on an older coach?

Often yes, though it depends on the wall thickness, the opening dimensions, and whether a current production unit matches your application. Frameless assemblies bond glass to a carrier and rely on compression against the wall, so the wall surface has to be flat and sound. Where the original is discontinued, we look at compatible current assemblies and tell you honestly if adapting the opening is a reasonable job or not.
