Everything a boom does ends up in the subframe, so the structural repairs on an aerial lift truck concentrate in a few square feet of steel underneath the turret.

Where the boom puts its load

An aerial device applies its load to the truck through a turret bearing on a pedestal, mounted to a reinforced subframe that spreads the force into the chassis rails. When the boom extends out to one side with a worker in the platform, the resulting overturning moment is large, and it is reacted by the subframe and the outriggers. Nothing about that load is small.

That force is not steady. It changes as the boom rotates, extends, and as the platform moves, so the subframe sees a constantly varying load rather than a static one. Add years of that and the mounting welds around the turret pedestal are the most fatigue-loaded structure on the vehicle. Cycles accumulate far faster than the hour meter suggests they should.

Cracking there is cumulative. It starts as a hairline at a weld toe, extends slowly, and does not announce itself until somebody looks. Which is precisely why any body or subframe inspection on one of these trucks should include a careful look at the pedestal mount, whether or not that is what brought the truck in. It takes a few minutes with a light and a mirror.

Outriggers, cutouts, and what corrodes

Outrigger cylinders and their mounts take the reaction force from the boom, transmitted through a pad that may be sitting on gravel, an uneven shoulder, or a curb. Setting up on an unlevel surface loads one leg far harder than the design intended, and mount cracking or cylinder pin wear follows. Pads set on a soft shoulder or loose gravel make all of that worse again.

The body around outrigger cutouts corrodes for a specific reason: the cutouts break the continuity of the body panels and create edges, pockets, and drainage paths that collect road spray and debris. Those edges are also where paint is thinnest after fabrication. Corrosion there is nearly universal on trucks past a certain age. Fabricated edges are always where the original coating was thinnest.

Boom rests and cradles wear from repeated contact. The boom drops into the rest thousands of times, the pad wears, and eventually metal contacts metal, at which point both the rest and the boom underside start taking damage. Replacing a worn rest pad is inexpensive. Repairing the structure it protects is not. Rest pads are a maintenance item worth taking seriously.

What we do and where the line sits

Our scope on aerial lift trucks is the body, the subframe, the mounting structure, outrigger structural components, and refinishing. That covers most of what a collision or years of service damages, and fabrication and heavy welding are done in house at our Yorba Linda building. Refinishing to a utility fleet colour, including reflective markings and identification, sits inside the same scope.

Boom certification, dielectric testing on insulated units, and the periodic inspections required for the aerial device itself are handled by the lift manufacturer or a qualified inspection provider, not here. That boundary is not negotiable and we would rather state it in the first conversation than have you discover it when the truck is due back. It is a safety boundary rather than a business preference.

In practice the two sides coordinate well. Structural repair to a subframe or a turret mount usually needs to be followed by the appropriate inspection of the device, and planning that sequence in advance keeps the truck from waiting for an appointment after our work is finished. Telling us the inspection date at the start lets us plan backward from it.

We found a crack near the turret mount. Can the truck keep working?

That call belongs to your qualified inspector, not to a body shop, and we would not tell you otherwise. What we can say is that cracking in that location is fatigue driven and cumulative, so it will not stabilize on its own. Bring it in for evaluation of the subframe and mount structure, and coordinate the device inspection alongside.

Do you certify the boom after structural repair?

No. Aerial device certification and dielectric testing on insulated booms are performed by the lift manufacturer or an accredited inspection provider. We handle the truck side: subframe, mounts, outrigger structure, body, and paint. We will schedule our work so the vehicle can go straight to its inspection appointment rather than waiting weeks in between.

The body is rusting badly around the outrigger openings. Repairable?

Usually yes, and it is worth doing before it reaches the mounting structure. We cut back to sound material, let in new panel and any affected framing, and treat the edges properly, since fabricated edges around cutouts are where the original coating was always thinnest. Both faces get coated so it does not restart from inside.

Can you repaint a utility fleet colour and reapply reflective markings?

Yes. We document existing markings and placement before removal, refinish, and reapply so the vehicle matches the rest of your fleet. Reflective conspicuity markings and any required identification get planned into the sequence. Body and paint labor is posted at $210 per hour with prep itemized separately on the estimate.
