RV Cabinet and Furniture Repair

Furniture in a recreational vehicle is asked to survive an earthquake several hours long, several times a year, and the way most of it is built means the fasteners give up long before the wood does.

How production cabinetry is built and why it loosens

Most factory cabinet boxes are thin plywood or a light composite panel, assembled with staples and a bead of glue, with a solid hardwood face frame applied to the front for appearance and rigidity. It is a reasonable design for weight, and the failure mode is predictable. Road input works the staples in their holes, the glue line at a butt joint fatigues, and the box begins to rack. Once a box is out of square, doors stop closing evenly and drawer slides start binding at one end of travel.

Fastener pullout is the other half of it. Screws into the end grain of thin plywood, or into a composite core, hold well when new and progressively less well as vibration enlarges the hole. Driving a larger screw into the same damaged hole works for a few months. The correct repair is to restore the material: a glued dowel or a hardwood plug reamed and redrilled, or a threaded insert set into the panel so the load is spread across a wider area of intact material.

Overhead cabinets deserve extra scrutiny because their failure is a safety matter rather than a nuisance. They are typically hung from a ledger strip screwed into the wall structure, and a loaded upper cabinet in a coach that goes over a hard expansion joint puts a substantial shock load into that strip. We check upper cabinet attachment on any interior job as a matter of course, and where it is inadequate we fasten into the aluminum studs or add blocking rather than trusting fasteners into a skin panel.

Doors, drawers, and hardware chosen for a moving vehicle

European concealed hinges are the standard for a reason: they adjust in three axes, so a door on a slightly racked box can be brought back into alignment without touching the box. Their weakness is the cup bored into the door and the mounting plate screwed into the box side. When the cup screws strip out of a composite door, a hinge repair plate or a resin fill and redrill restores it. When the door itself has delaminated around the cup, the door gets rebuilt.

Drawer hardware is where residential thinking causes the most trouble. A standard ball-bearing side mount slide has no provision to stay closed against acceleration, so a drawer full of cookware opens itself on a downhill grade. RV-specific slides include a positive detent or a friction catch that holds against motion, and undermount slides with a soft-close mechanism do the same job more quietly. Retrofitting these is a common and worthwhile upgrade during any other cabinet work.

Latches are the last piece and the one owners notice most. Push-button and magnetic catches on doors relax over time, and a magnetic catch that has lost half its pull will hold a door in a driveway and release it on the highway. We replace catches as a set rather than one at a time, because the ones that have not failed yet are the same age as the one that did.

Edge banding and veneer lift is cosmetic but it spreads. Heat and humidity release the adhesive at an exposed edge, and once a corner lifts it catches on everything until a strip is gone. Re-banding with a heat-activated tape and trimming flush is quick. Larger veneer lifts on a door face are repaired with injected adhesive and clamping, which preserves the original grain and color match far better than replacing one door out of a run.

Dinettes, sofas, and powered seating

Jackknife sofas and folding dinettes carry a mechanism that gets folded thousands of times, and they fail at the pivot rather than in the upholstery. Worn pivot bushings produce a seat that leans, sticks, or drops suddenly when released. Replacing bushings and hardware is straightforward when the frame is sound. Where the frame is stapled softwood that has split at the pivot, we rebuild that member in hardwood, because reinforcing a split with a plate simply moves the crack an inch over.

Booth dinettes are usually built as storage boxes with a seat on top, and the box is the structural element. When the box has been loaded with tools and canned goods for years, the bottom panel sags and the joints open, which shows up as a seat that rocks and a lid that no longer sits flush. We rebuild the box with proper corner blocking and a reinforced base so it can carry what people actually put in it.

Powered theater seating adds electrical and mechanical complexity in a small package. The common failures are the actuator motor, the wiring harness at the pivot where it flexes on every cycle, the control switch, and the plastic gearbox in low-cost actuators. Most are replaceable with a matching unit if the mounting geometry is measured properly. Where the seat base has broken away from the floor anchorage, that is a structural fix first, since a seat is carrying a person.

Countertops come into this too. Solid surface material can be sanded, re-seamed, and repaired essentially invisibly, which makes it worth saving. Laminate over particle core that has swollen from a sink leak cannot, and that becomes a replacement. Where a countertop is being replaced anyway, it is the right moment to reconsider weight, since stone in a coach adds mass high and far from the centerline.

Matching existing work and building new

Matching an existing interior is mostly a finish problem rather than a joinery problem. Manufacturers use a limited set of door styles and stains, and while the exact original components are frequently unavailable years later, the profile can be reproduced and the finish matched by spraying to a sample rather than buying a can labeled with the same name. We build a step panel and get your approval on the match before anything goes onto a finished part.

Where a piece is genuinely unavailable and cannot be repaired, we build the replacement in the shop. Boxes in Baltic birch, hardwood face frames and doors, and a sprayed catalyzed finish produce a component that is stronger than what came out and looks like it belongs. The temptation with a one-off is to fit it to the opening that exists, but an opening in a coach that has flexed for fifteen years is not square, so we scribe rather than assume.

The practical advantage of doing this work in a 35,000 square foot shop is that the unit and the millwork are in the same building. Components are fitted to the actual opening, adjusted, finished, and installed without a round trip to an outside cabinet shop, and a coach up to 45 feet sits inside for the duration. It shortens the job and it removes the seam where most subcontracted interior work goes wrong.

Frequently Asked Questions

My cabinet doors will not stay closed. Is that the door or the box?

Check the gap around the door first. An even gap all the way around means the box is square and the catch or hinge has relaxed, which is a quick fix. A gap that tapers means the box has racked out of square, and adjusting the hinge only masks it while the door drags on one corner. Squaring and re-blocking the case is the repair that actually holds.

Can you match my existing cabinet finish?

In nearly every case. We rarely find the original component available years after the fact, but we reproduce the door profile and match the finish by spraying to a physical sample from your unit rather than trusting a color name. You approve a step panel before anything goes on a visible part. Where an entire run is worn, refinishing the whole run gives a better result than matching one piece into it.

Is it worth repairing a delaminated cabinet door?

Usually yes, and it is often the better outcome. A door that has swollen or lifted around the hinge cup can be filled, redrilled, and refinished for less than a matched replacement costs, and it keeps the original grain in the run. Where the panel has swelled from sustained water contact rather than a single event, the material is compromised and a new door is the honest recommendation.

Why do my drawers open while I am driving?

Because they were built with residential slides. A standard ball-bearing slide has nothing holding it closed except friction, and acceleration on a grade beats friction every time. RV-rated slides use a positive detent, and undermount soft-close units add a closing mechanism as well. Retrofitting is straightforward and it is the single most satisfying cabinet upgrade we do.

Can you build a cabinet that does not exist in my floorplan?

Yes, and that is a large share of the work. Common requests are a pantry in place of a wasted corner, a wardrobe with real hanging depth, and a work surface with cable management. The constraints are slide travel, weight placement, and access to whatever runs behind the wall. We measure and scribe to the actual opening, because a coach with fifteen years of flex in it has no square openings left.

Do you repair the seating in commercial and specialty vehicles?

We do interior joinery, seating structure, and mounting on work vans, mobile offices, and specialty bodies. Anchorage into the floor or wall structure is done to the seat manufacturer specification with proper backing. On commercial units our scope is body, paint, structure, and equipment installation, so anything involving the engine or drivetrain goes to a chassis specialist.
