Vinyl either lasts seven years or lifts in seven months, and the variable is almost never the film itself, it is the surface it went onto and the temperature it went on at.

Cast film, calendered film, and why it matters

Calendered vinyl is rolled from a mass of resin like dough. It is thicker, cheaper, and it retains a memory of being stretched flat, which means it wants to shrink back toward its original shape for its whole service life. Cast vinyl is poured as a liquid onto a casting sheet and cured without tension. It is thinner, more conformable, and dimensionally stable. On a curved cap or a riveted panel, that difference decides whether the graphic stays down.

For full wraps and any compound curve, we use cast film with an air release liner, typically in the 2 mil range, over a matched overlaminate for ultraviolet and abrasion protection. For flat panel lettering and simple fleet identification on a box side, a good intermediate calendered film is appropriate and costs less. Using calendered material on a curved surface to save money is the single most common reason a wrap fails early, and it fails by lifting at every edge and corner simultaneously.

Overlaminate is not optional on printed graphics. Digital ink has no meaningful ultraviolet resistance on its own, and a printed wrap without a laminate in Southern California sun starts shifting color inside two summers. The laminate also carries the abrasion load from washing, which on a vehicle that gets brush washed matters considerably. Gloss, satin, and matte laminates all perform, but matte shows cleaning marks fastest.

What the film is going onto

Surface energy governs adhesion. Fresh wax, silicone based dressings, and polish residue all lower it, and vinyl applied over any of them bonds to the contamination rather than to the panel. Preparation is a two stage clean: a detergent wash to remove the bulk, then an isopropyl alcohol wipe on every square inch immediately before application. Skipping the second stage is invisible on day one and obvious at month three.

Recreational vehicle surfaces bring their own complications. Gelcoat that has been polished for twenty years holds residue in the pores. Fresh paint has to fully cure and outgas before it is covered, generally a matter of weeks, because solvent still leaving the film will blister under vinyl. Rivets, seams, corrugations, and awning rails all need either post heating to set the film into the profile or a relief cut and an overlap, decided panel by panel.

Existing graphics have to come off completely. Factory decals on units past ten years old are usually brittle, and they come away in chips rather than sheets, leaving a bed of hardened adhesive. That is heat, plastic razor work, adhesive remover, and patience. It is often the largest single line on a re-wrap estimate, and shops that quote a wrap without inspecting the old graphics are quoting a number they will have to revise.

Installation on a body this large

Panel temperature drives everything. Cast film applies best in a fairly narrow band, and an exterior wall parked in direct sun will sit far above it while a shaded side sits below. That is why all of this work happens indoors on a climate controlled panel. Film applied to a hot surface over-relaxes and cannot be repositioned. Film applied cold will not conform into a rivet head and will release from it as the panel warms.

Long panels are laid in planned sections with overlaps placed at natural break points: below a body line, at a seam, behind a rail. Seams put in arbitrary locations catch the eye and catch water. Where a design crosses a slide room, the graphic is cut at the slide seal line and registered so that it aligns when the room is retracted, which is where a lot of otherwise good wraps look wrong.

Post heating is the step that gets skipped and the step that decides longevity. Cast vinyl retains stress from being stretched into a recess or over a rivet, and heating the film to the manufacturer specified temperature resets that memory so it no longer wants to pull back. We post heat every stretched area and every edge, then check with a temperature gun rather than by feel. Edges in high stress locations also get sealed.

Fleet identification and legibility

Commercial operators have requirements beyond appearance. Carrier identification and unit numbering have legibility and placement rules, and reflective conspicuity marking on larger vehicles has its own specification. We lay those out to be compliant and readable at distance rather than fitting them around the design as an afterthought, and we keep the cut files so replacements after a panel repair match the rest of the fleet exactly.

Design that works at 70 miles per hour is different from design that works on a screen. Small type disappears, low contrast combinations go flat in glare, and busy imagery reads as noise. The most effective fleet graphics we install use a large clear mark, one high contrast color relationship, and a single readable line of contact information placed where it is not interrupted by a bay door or a fuel fill.

Wraps also protect the paint underneath, which matters at resale and at lease turn in. A properly installed cast film removed within its service life comes off cleanly and leaves the original finish in better condition than the surrounding exposed paint. Film left on well past its life, or calendered film on a curve, is the case where removal gets expensive because it comes off in fragments.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will a wrap last on a coach parked outside?

A cast film with a matched overlaminate, properly installed on prepared surfaces, generally gives five to seven years in this climate. Horizontal surfaces like the roof and upper cap fade faster than the vertical walls because they take more direct exposure. Covered storage extends that noticeably. Calendered film on curved sections is the case where you should expect far less, which is why we do not use it there.

Can you wrap over existing graphics?

We do not recommend it, and on most units we will not. Old decals telegraph their edges through new film, and if the underlying adhesive is failing, the new graphic fails with it. Removal is genuine labor on units past ten years, sometimes a significant portion of the total, but it is the difference between a wrap that looks correct and one that shows the ghost of the previous design.

Will removing the wrap later damage my paint?

Removed within its service life, no. Cast film comes away with controlled heat and leaves the finish underneath in better condition than the exposed paint around it, because it has been shielded from ultraviolet the whole time. Film left on well beyond its life becomes brittle and lifts in fragments, which turns removal into a long job. Sound original paint underneath is the assumption in either case.

Can I replace just one damaged section?

Yes, and it is routine after body repair. The practical issue is that the surrounding film has been aging in sunlight while the replacement is new, so a perfect color match to the original print will still read slightly brighter. Where that is visible, we replace to the nearest seam or body line so the difference falls on a natural break instead of in the middle of a panel.

Do you handle design, or do I need to supply artwork?

Either. We install supplied production files, and we also lay out designs from scratch or adapt existing brand assets to the actual panel geometry of your vehicle, which is a step that gets missed when artwork is designed on a flat rectangle. Bay doors, slide seams, rails, and fill points all interrupt a design, and planning around them is what separates a wrap that looks intentional from one that looks applied.

How long does a full wrap take?

On a large coach, budget five to ten working days. Removal of old graphics, surface preparation, and the panel by panel application all take real time, and the film needs to sit before the unit is washed or exposed to weather. Simple fleet lettering and unit numbers on a box body is usually a one to two day job depending on how many vehicles are cycling through.
