What leachate does to a steel body

Compacted household and commercial waste releases liquid, and that liquid is acidic, salty, and biologically active. It pools in the hopper, runs along seams, and gets flung onto the cab and the chassis every time the body is operated. This is not comparable to road salt exposure. It is continuous chemical attack on the inside surface of a structure that also carries load.

The result is corrosion that starts where you cannot see it. A hopper floor that looks acceptable from above may have lost a third of its thickness on the underside where liquid tracked into a seam. Tailgate seals and their surrounding structure suffer the same way, which is why leaking tailgates are so common on mid-life trucks. Thickness readings tell the truth.

Cabs get it secondhand. Spray from the loading cycle, plus whatever runs down the front of the body, means the back of the cab and the lower panels see the same chemistry as the hopper. Corrosion at the cab rear and along the lower seams is a routine finding on a fleet of any age. Cab corrosion here is rarely a paint problem.

Welds that crack because of repetition

A packer body is a hydraulic machine as much as a container. The ram cycles hundreds of times a shift, generating high forces against the body structure, and the load goes into the same weld locations every single time. That is textbook fatigue loading, and fatigue does not care whether the weld was adequate for a static load. Fatigue is a count, not a force.

Cracks appear at the toe of welds around ram guide mounts, at corner transitions in the hopper, and where a thick plate meets thinner sheet. Grinding out and re-welding the crack restores the same geometry that concentrated stress there, so the crack returns, often further along the same line. Repeat cracking at a single location is a design message rather than a workmanship complaint.

The durable repair changes the stress distribution: extending the weld footprint, adding a doubler that transitions gradually, or reworking the corner radius where the design allows it. On automated side loaders, arm and fork mounts fail the same way, since each collection cycle loads the mount and there are a thousand cycles in a route day. Wear at the pivot accelerates all of it.

Cutting back rather than coating over

The temptation on a corroded refuse body is to weld a plate over the thin area and paint it. It looks finished. What it actually does is trap active corrosion under new steel and give the crevice between the two a place to concentrate liquid, which is why those repairs typically last a single season. Crevices are where corrosion prefers to live.

We cut back to sound metal, verify thickness at the boundary, and let in new material with full penetration where the section requires it. Both faces of the repair get treated and coated, including the interior surface that nobody will ever look at, because that is the side the leachate lives on. Access for coating is planned before the panel goes in.

Fabrication and heavy welding are in house, so hopper floors, tailgate structure, packer panels, arm mounts, and cab lower sections are all repairable here rather than requiring a body manufacturer. On a fleet of vehicles that stay in service fifteen years, that changes the economics substantially. A body rebuilt properly at year eight is still working at year fifteen, which is the whole economic argument.

Frequently Asked Questions

The same weld on our packer has cracked three times. What are we doing wrong?

Probably nothing except repairing it the same way each time. Repeat cracking at one location is a fatigue signature: the geometry concentrates stress and the cycle count is enormous. The fix is to change the local stiffness rather than restore it, through added material, a longer transition, or a revised mount, so the load spreads instead of focusing on one weld toe.

How do we know when a hopper floor needs replacement rather than repair?

Thickness measurement across the area, not appearance. Localized loss surrounded by sound material is a let-in repair. Once section loss is general across the floor, replacing panels one at a time means returning every few months as the next thin area lets go. We measure and tell you which situation you are in before quoting.

Can you repaint a refuse body so it actually holds up?

Yes, with the caveat that coating quality depends on what is underneath. Paint applied over compromised steel fails at the corrosion, not at the paint. We correct the substrate first, prepare properly, and coat interior surfaces as well where access allows. That combination lasts. Colour over rust does not, regardless of the product used.

Do you service the hydraulics or the chassis?

No. Hydraulic system service, engine work, drivetrain work, and DOT inspections stay with a commercial truck service provider. We handle body structure, welding and fabrication, corrosion repair, mounting structure, collision damage, and refinishing. Being clear about that boundary lets a fleet manager book both sides without the truck sitting idle in between.
