Truck Campers Repair

A slide-in camper is the only RV that has no chassis of its own, which means it spends its life either bolted to a pickup or standing on four jacks, and both conditions break things.

A box that borrows a chassis

Everything about this body style follows from one fact: the camper is self-supporting but has no running gear. Its floor and lower framing have to be stiff enough to span the pickup bed, carry a cabover full of mattress and occupants, and then stand on four jack points with nothing underneath at all. Nothing else in the recreational vehicle world is asked to do that.

Those two load cases are completely different. Sitting in a truck bed, the camper is supported along the floor and clamped at the bed rails. Standing on jacks, it hangs from four points bolted into the sidewalls, and the sidewalls become tension and shear members. Most owners cycle between these states several times a season. Each transition loads the structure differently.

The cabover makes it harder. That sleeping area projects forward over the truck cab with no support underneath, so its entire weight is cantilevered off the front wall of the box. Add two adults and the bending load at that junction is significant, which is why stress cracking at the cabover-to-box transition is the classic finding. Cracks there rarely stay short.

What goes wrong in the driveway

Jack mounts tear out of sidewalls more often than anything else we see on these. The mount concentrates a quarter of the camper weight into a bracket bolted to a laminated wall, and the load goes sideways as soon as the camper is even slightly off level or one jack is on soft ground. The wall gives before the bracket does.

Backing a truck under a raised camper is where the rest of it happens. Wing walls, the panels that drop down alongside the bed, get caught on bed rails and cracked at their upper corners. Tailgate contact, bumper contact, and clamp tightening against an unsupported panel all leave marks on both vehicles. It happens quickly, and usually with somebody guiding from outside.

Bed rail clamp points deserve their own inspection. Turnbuckles pulled excessively tight put a permanent load into the camper sidewall and into the truck bed sheet metal, and the damage accumulates quietly. A camper that has been overtightened for years shows compression marks at the clamp locations and sometimes a bowed bed side on the truck. Snug is enough. Tighter is not better.

Rebuilding mounts and the cabover joint

Jack mount repair means restoring the wall structure behind the bracket, not just re-bolting the bracket. We open the wall, replace crushed or torn framing, add proper load distribution, and re-bond the laminate. Reattaching a mount to compromised material is a repair with a very short life and a bad failure mode. A mount that releases with the camper elevated is genuinely dangerous.

Cabover cracking is repaired by addressing the joint. Fiberglass or composite repair restores the surface, but the framing at the transition is what carries the bending, so reinforcement goes in first where the design allows. Then the laminate goes back over sound structure and the surface is faired and refinished. Surface material over an unreinforced crack is the version that returns next season.

Water damage travels the same path as the cracks. A separated cabover joint admits moisture directly into the bunk floor, and campers stored outdoors between trips give it time to work. Meter readings before teardown set the scope honestly, which matters because these units are small enough that owners expect small numbers. The figure reflects what the moisture actually did rather than what the outside looks like.

Frequently Asked Questions

One of my jacks bent and the camper dropped a few inches. What now?

Have it inspected before loading it again. A partial drop puts an impulse into the mount on that corner and often into the diagonal opposite corner as well. The bracket may look fine while the wall structure behind it is crushed. We check all four mounts, the floor framing, and the cabover joint after any drop event.

Should the truck be inspected too after camper damage?

Usually yes, and the bed is the part people forget. Clamp loads, contact during loading, and any shifting event all transfer into bed rails, bed sides, and the tie-down anchor points. Photographing both vehicles together supports the claim and prevents the truck damage from being treated as unrelated wear later on.

Are cracks at the front of the cabover normal on an older camper?

Common is not the same as acceptable. They indicate the cantilevered nose is working against the box, and they tend to lengthen rather than stabilize. Early on, reinforcement and a proper laminate repair are straightforward. Left alone, water enters the crack, the bunk floor softens, and the repair scope multiplies.

Can you work on the camper while it is off the truck?

That is normally how we do it. Working on a camper standing on its own jacks in a bay gives access to the floor, the wing walls, and all four mounts, and it lets you keep using the pickup. We do ask that you bring it in on the truck so the loaded fit can be checked before and after.
