Compartments, shelves, and where the load goes
A steel or aluminum service body mounts to the chassis rails through a subframe or mounting brackets and carries its own load through compartment walls and floor structure. Each compartment is an opening, so the body relies on the material between openings and on the floor pan to hold its shape. Openings are never helpful to a structure, and a service body is mostly openings.
Shelving multiplies the effect. A compartment loaded with heavy tooling puts that mass on shelf brackets fastened into a compartment wall that is thin sheet. Under braking, the load goes forward into those anchors. Pull-through at shelf fasteners is one of the most routine repairs on a working mechanic truck, and it is nearly always an anchoring method problem rather than an overload.
The body-to-frame interface then handles everything the body cannot. Chassis rails flex over uneven ground, the body resists, and the mounting hardware carries the difference. Corrosion at that interface is common because it is a crevice between two components that traps moisture and is almost never inspected. We clean, inspect, and reset that interface whenever a body is off for other work.
Cranes, outriggers, and hinge wear
Adding a crane changes the load case entirely. A boom lifting a load out to one side generates a large overturning moment that goes through the crane mount, into the body or subframe, and down to the outrigger pad and the chassis. Those are concentrated loads applied at a few points, and the body was designed around distributed toolbox weight.
What shows up as a result is stress cracking at the crane mount and around the outrigger pad locations, plus deformation of the compartment floor above an outrigger. That is a fabrication repair with reinforcement, not a body panel repair, and it needs to account for where the load is actually going rather than just closing the crack. Closing a crack is not the same as removing its cause.
Compartment doors are the more mundane but more frequent complaint. Hinges wear, gas struts on vertical doors lose pressure, and latches get slammed thousands of times. A door that no longer seals lets water into a compartment full of tools, and the resulting rust bill exceeds what the hinge repair would have cost. Struts and hinges are inexpensive parts on an expensive vehicle.
Repairing, remounting, or replacing the body
Because we install service bodies as well as repair them, the conversation about a badly damaged body has a third option. A body that is beyond economical repair can be replaced and remounted here, with the wiring, lighting, crane, and compressor transferred, rather than routing the truck to a separate upfitter after the collision work is done. One shop, one sequence, one date.
That also means we can move a good body to a new chassis. On a fleet where the body outlives the truck, transferring a serviceable body onto a replacement chassis is often the sensible economic decision, and it involves subframe work, mounting, wiring, and lighting rather than a simple lift and drop. Frame dimensions and mount spacing rarely match between chassis generations.
Fabrication supports both routes. Compartment repairs, door frames, shelving with proper load distribution, crane mount reinforcement, and custom equipment mounting all get built on site. Body and paint labor is posted at $210 per hour, with mechanical and electrical work at $260 per hour. Diagnostics run $285 per hour and are credited toward an authorized repair, and detail work is posted at $95 per hour.

Frequently Asked Questions
The floor above my outrigger has started to dish. Is that serious?
It is worth addressing promptly. Dishing means the outrigger load is exceeding what the local structure can carry, and continuing to set up on that pad will worsen it and eventually affect the crane mount. We reinforce the load path from the pad through the body to the frame rather than simply flattening the floor panel.
Can you move my service body to a new truck?
Yes, and it is a common request when a body is in better shape than the chassis under it. The job includes subframe and mounting work, electrical and lighting integration, and re-mounting any crane or compressor with attention to the load path on the new frame. We inspect the body first, since transferring a corroded one is money poorly spent.
Shelf anchors keep tearing out of my compartment walls. Fix?
Add load distribution rather than more fasteners. Anchors bolted through thin compartment sheet concentrate the entire shelf load into a few small areas, and braking multiplies it. We repair the torn material, install backing that spreads the load into the surrounding structure, and where possible tie shelving into the floor as well as the wall.
Do you paint service bodies to match a fleet colour?
Regularly. Fleet colours on steel and aluminum bodies are straightforward once the substrate is prepared properly, and we spray out and check against an existing vehicle so a repaired or new body does not stand out in a yard. Graphics and reflective markings get planned into the same sequence rather than sent elsewhere.
