Refinishing a 40-foot vehicle is not a bigger version of painting a car, because nothing about color matching, film build, or flash time behaves the same way once a single panel is longer than the booth is wide in most shops.

Why length changes the whole approach

Estimating software has entries for a fender and a quarter panel. It has nothing for a continuous surface running thirty six feet from the front cap seam to the rear corner. So refinish time here is calculated manually from surface area, substrate condition, the number of masked penetrations, and how many separate colors and stripes cross the panel. That number is defensible when an adjuster asks how it was derived, which matters because it is always higher than a guide would suggest.

Spraying long panels also changes technique. A painter has a working window before the leading edge of a wet pass begins to set, and on a surface that long you cannot simply move faster to beat it. The answer is coordinated passes, correct reducer selection for the shop temperature that day, and gun setup that lays a wide consistent fan without dry edging. A dry edge halfway down a sidewall shows up as a stripe of dull texture that no amount of polishing removes.

Booth geometry is the practical constraint that turns most shops away. You need clearance to walk both sides of a 45-foot coach with a gun and a hose, height to reach the roof line, and airflow that still moves overspray correctly with that much mass in the chamber. Painting an oversized body in a space sized for cars produces dirt in the film and uneven flash, and no amount of cutting and buffing recovers a panel that flashed unevenly.

Substrate is the whole job

A single coach can present four different substrates on one wall: gelcoated fiberglass, painted fiberglass, aluminum sheet, and molded plastic on the caps and bumper fascias. Each needs its own preparation. Gelcoat has to be scuffed and cleaned of the mold release and polish residue that decades of detailing have driven into it. Bare aluminum needs an etch or a self etching primer. Flexible plastics need an adhesion promoter and a flex additive in the topcoat, or the finish cracks at the first flex point.

Old finishes have to be evaluated rather than assumed. We check film thickness with a gauge, look for lifting when solvent is applied to a test area, and inspect for previous repairs that were sprayed over silicone contamination. Spraying a new system over an unstable one produces delamination that appears weeks later as sheets of clear lifting at a panel edge, and by then the only fix is stripping back to substrate and starting over.

Sanding is scheduled, not improvised. Body work gets blocked with progressively finer abrasive, primer is guide coated and blocked flat, and sealer goes on to give a uniform color base and a consistent absorption rate under the basecoat. Skipping the sealer is a common shortcut on large jobs and it shows up as mottling: patches where the basecoat sat differently over varying substrate porosity, visible only after the clear is on and impossible to fix without redoing the panel.

Color match on a body this size

We read the existing finish with a spectrophotometer and pull variant formulas, but the instrument gives a starting point rather than an answer. Every coach on the road has faded, and it has faded unevenly: the roof and the sun facing side are further gone than the shaded side. A single formula sprayed across all of it will match one wall and miss the other. Spray out cards, checked against the actual panel in daylight, settle it.

Blending is not optional at this scale. We carry the basecoat into the adjacent panel and clear the full section to a natural break, which means a cap seam, a body line, an awning rail, or a bay door edge. Stopping a repair hard at an arbitrary point in the middle of a long wall creates a vertical transition line, and the eye finds it instantly in raking light even when the color is technically correct.

Metallics and pearls raise the difficulty further because they are orientation dependent. The flake has to lay the same way in the repair as in the original panel, which is a function of gun distance, air pressure, and how the control coat is applied. Get it slightly wrong and the repair matches perfectly head on and goes noticeably lighter or darker when viewed down the length of the vehicle, which is exactly how anyone looks at an RV.

Curing, compliance, and the finish you take home

Southern California air quality regulation governs what can legally be sprayed here, and the compliant waterborne and low volatile organic compound systems in use today are excellent, but they are far more sensitive to booth temperature and humidity than the solvent systems they replaced. Flash times shift with conditions. We control the booth environment and adjust reducer and additive selection to the day rather than to a chart, because a coating that flashed wrong cannot be corrected afterward.

Bake schedules matter for durability, not just for turnaround. A clear that is force dried to handling hardness is not fully cross linked, and polishing it too early leaves swirl marks that reappear as the film continues to shrink. We let the film reach proper hardness before de-nibbing dust inclusions, cutting, and polishing, which is why a quality repaint on a large unit is measured in weeks rather than days.

The last stage is reassembly and inspection under multiple light sources. Trim, awning rails, lights, and badging go back with new gaskets and sealant where the originals were removed. We walk the unit in daylight, under shop lighting, and with a low angle handheld to check for texture differences, then correct anything that reads before it goes out. Sending a large body out having only inspected it under one light source is how texture mismatches reach the customer.

What does a full repaint on a large coach cost?

It is driven by length, substrate condition, and design complexity rather than by a flat number. A single color unit with sound existing finish is at the low end. A multi color design with stripes and masked graphics, over a surface that needs stripping and priming first, can be several times that. Can you match my existing color instead of repainting the whole unit?

Usually yes, and it is often the better value. We read the panel with a spectrophotometer, spray out test cards, and check them against your actual finish in daylight rather than under shop lights. The color is then blended into the adjacent panels and cleared to a natural break so there is no hard transition line. Heavily oxidized single stage finishes are the case where a full panel refinish beats a blend.

How long does a repaint take?

A panel repair and blend is generally one to two weeks. A full body repaint on a 40-foot coach runs four to eight weeks, and most of that is not spray time. It is stripping, body work, priming and blocking, masking, and cure. Rushing the cure to shorten the schedule is what produces swirl marks that come back and clear that fails early, so we do not compress that stage.

Why does paint need to cure before polishing?

Because a clear coat that is hard to the touch is not yet fully cross linked. The film continues to shrink slightly as it completes cure. Polishing at that stage fills the microscopic scratches temporarily, and as the film settles they reappear as swirl marks and haze. Waiting for proper hardness before de-nibbing and cutting is the difference between a finish that stays sharp and one that dulls in a month.

Do you paint commercial trucks and box bodies?

Yes. Cab refinishing, box and body panel painting, structural repair, and equipment installation are all in scope for commercial vehicles. Engine, drivetrain, and inspection services are not something we perform. Fleet repaints are typically scheduled in batches so vehicles cycle through rather than sitting as a group, which keeps more of the fleet working while the program runs.

Will the new paint fade at the same rate as the rest of the vehicle?

A modern basecoat and clear system with proper ultraviolet package will hold color considerably longer than the original finish on an older unit. That means over time the repaired area may look better than its surroundings rather than worse. Where that difference would be obvious, we recommend refinishing to a natural break line or extending the scope so the whole visible plane ages together.
